A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY OF OBSTACLES OF GRADE IV STUDENTS IN UNDERSTANDING MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the obstacles experienced by grade IV elementary school students in understanding basic mathematical concepts. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study are grade IV students with class teachers as supporting informants. Data collection techniques include interviews, observations and documents, which are further analyzed through the stages of organizing, describing, grouping, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show that students' obstacles in understanding mathematics are influenced by internal and external factors. The focus of this research is directed at external factors including the limitations of learning methods and media used by teachers as well as crowded and less conducive classroom conditions. This shows that it is necessary to make efforts from teachers, schools and students to create a mathematics learning process that is more interactive, varied and supports the achievement of learning goals.
