Abstract
Understanding the concept of time is one of the fundamental competencies that elementary school students need to master because it plays an important role in both daily life and English language learning, particularly in the telling time topic. Initial observations conducted in the fourth grade of SDN Gemurung revealed that some students experienced difficulties in reading analog clocks, understanding minute divisions, and expressing time correctly in English. This community service program aimed to optimize students' understanding of the concept of time through learning assistance activities for fourth-grade students at SDN Gemurung. The program was carried out in five learning sessions involving 21 students. The implementation consisted of three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The learning assistance activities included contextual explanations, analog clock-reading practice, time-telling practice in English, structured exercises, and formative evaluation through question-and-answer sessions and oral practice. The results indicated a gradual improvement in students' understanding throughout the learning sessions. Students demonstrated better comprehension of the functions of clock hands, improved accuracy in reading minutes, greater ability to use expressions such as half past, quarter past, and quarter to, as well as increased participation and confidence in responding to questions. Therefore, the learning assistance program implemented in a gradual and systematic manner was effective in optimizing fourth-grade students' understanding of the concept of time at SDN Gemurung. Learning assistance supported by concept reinforcement, repetitive practice, and formative evaluation can serve as an alternative approach to teaching telling time in elementary schools.
